The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) is a specialist institute of the University of Greenwich. NRI’s work is primarily aimed at poverty reduction, economic growth and food security in developing and transition economy countries. It is unique in possessing a multi-disciplinary staff of >80 social scientists, natural scientists, economists, and technologists with expertise ranging from agricultural marketing to social anthropology, and extensive experience of working, living and collaboratively managing projects in partnership with in-country institutions in the developing world. Over the past 10 years, NRI has run over 1,200 projects in sub-Saharan Africa with a total turnover of more than 145 million dollars on a wide variety of food and agricultural issues. The staff involved in this project have expertise in: social, economic and institutional research; stakeholder analysis and strategic engagement; participatory M&E expertise; farmer capacity building through experimentation (farmer field schools etc); development of appropriate and practical research methodologies; project management and collaborative capacity strengthening of project management skills with local partners; pre and post harvest integrated pest management strategies; multi-institutional, trans-disciplinary and multi-cultural team work; and current and long term regional experience in East Africa.
